Chronic Pain.

Chronic pain is common in Australia, affecting up to 20% of the population.

The management of chronic pain generally requires a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan, which may include pain education, exercise, hands on treatment, and mindfulness meditation.

We encourage you to be active in your own self-management, and we provide a number of on-site, supervised exercise options in addition to hands-on treatment and education. These options include Physiotherapy or Exercise Physiology led 1:1s or classes, where tailored exercise programmes can be prescribed.

About Chronic Pain Treatment

Some of our Physiotherapists, including Marelle Wilson (Titled Pain Physiotherapist), Felicity Kantzavelos, Catherine O’Brien and Emil Tow, can assess and provide treatment for chronic pain. They collaborate with you to develop a plan of action which is appropriate for your needs. When you’ve had pain for a long time, chances are you have a pretty good idea about what works and what doesn’t. Although Physiotherapists know a fair bit about pain, you are the expert in your own life and pain and your input is always very valuable.

At your first 60 minute assessment, they will:

  • Take a thorough history, including all likely contributions to your pain (for example, the history and nature of the pain, depression and anxiety markers, fear of re-injury, and some general information about you)
  • Perform a thorough physical examination, including screening for signs of central sensitisation (a sensitive nervous system)
  • Develop a treatment plan

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Courses and Mindfulness Meditation may also be helpful in managing chronic pain, and may be incorporated into your treatment plan depending on your needs.
