Arthritis & Exercise

In yet another example of how exercise can be the most effective way to manage arthritis, researchers completed a systemic review of existing studies, to test the effect of therapeutic exercise on people who suffer from hip osteoarthritis (OA).

Just because you have been diagnosed with arthritis, or you have had scans that show degenerative changes, it doesn’t mean you can’t reduce your pain and improve your strength and function.

Interestingly, there is much more research out there which has studied the impact of treatments on knee arthritis, however this systematic review was able to combine data from nine trials (which included a total of 1,234 patients).

To meet the strict inclusion criteria, each of the trials had to be randomized, controlled, completed by at least 60% of subjects, and involved an exercise group (strengthening and/or aerobic) versus a non-exercise control group for pain relief in hip OA.

Afte rmeta-analysis of these studies the conclusion made by the authors was that Therapeutic exercise, especially with an element of strengthening, is an efficacious treatment for hip OA.
